Where are they from?
The Cherry Barb originates from streams and rivers of lowlands of Sri Lanka. Today all the fish available are farm bred.
How many can I keep?
Best kept in groups.
What are the ideal water conditions?
Ideal conditions are slightly acidic to neutral, soft to slightly hard. This popular hardy peaceful fish will adapt to a wide range of water parameters.
What do you feed them?
They are omnivores and will eat a variety of foods. Feed a varied diet of frozen, freeze dried and flake foods.
How do you breed them?
Adult fish are easy to sex as the male develops a deep red colour, by contrast the feamle is pale brown. When in condition breeding pairs will pass over fine leaved plants depositing 1 to 3 eggs each time which attach to the plants by a fine thread. The eggs will hatch out in aprox 24 hours, remove the adults as they will eat the eggs. Feed fry on infusoria then as they grow on newly hatched brine shrimp
