The Hypo Leopard Gecko is a popular and visually striking morph of the Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius). Known for its distinctive appearance, this gecko variation has become a favorite among reptile enthusiasts.
Origin: Leopard Geckos, including the Hypo Leopard variety, originate from arid regions of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and northwestern India. They are well-adapted to desert environments and have become a common and beloved pet reptile worldwide.
Temperature: Hypo Leopard Geckos require a warm and arid environment similar to their natural habitat. Maintain a temperature gradient within their enclosure, with a basking spot reaching around 90°F (32°C) and a cooler side around 75-80°F (24-27°C). Providing a heat source like an under-tank heater or heat lamp is essential to meet their temperature needs.
Housing: To house a Hypo Leopard Gecko, you’ll need an enclosure with a secure lid to prevent escapes. A 10-20-gallon terrarium is suitable for one gecko. Provide a substrate like paper towels, reptile carpet, or a mix of coconut coir and sand for digging. Include hiding spots, branches, and a shallow dish for water. Proper UVB lighting is not mandatory but can be beneficial for their overall well-being.
Feeding: Hypo Leopard Geckos are insectivores, and their diet primarily consists of live insects. Common food items include crickets, mealworms, and dubia roaches. Insects should be appropriately sized to avoid choking hazards. Dust the insects with a calcium and vitamin D3 supplement to ensure proper nutrition. Offer food every 2-3 days for adults and daily for juveniles.
Lifespan: With proper care, Hypo Leopard Geckos can live for 15-20 years or more in captivity. They mature sexually at around 9-12 months of age and can reproduce through egg-laying.
Behavior and Personality: Hypo Leopard Geckos are known for their docile and gentle nature. They are crepuscular, which means they are most active during dawn and dusk. While they may not be as social as some other reptiles, they can become accustomed to human presence and handling with patience. These geckos are generally easy to care for and make excellent reptile pets for beginners.
